The OPS18R is a retroreflective optical sensor which may be used in conjunction with suitable reflective tape to sense the speed of a motor. The output signal from the sensor is suitable for operation with tachometers, counters and many types of speed monitoring instruments. The use of optical sensing can provide the user with a quick and simple method of speed monitoring - particularly where motors have already been installed.
A piece of self adhesive reflective tape is placed on a clean area of the motor shaft. A suitable size of tape is 25mm x 25mm or as near as can be achieved. The OPS18R should be mounted away from the motor shaft so that it points at the reflective tape. It should be mounted greater than 60mm from the reflective tape and less than 1 metre overall Before fixing the sensor, it first should be connected to the tachometer or other instrument in use so that simple tests can be carried out. The motor should now be switched on and the sensor positioned so that the LED glows or pulses regularly and the tachometer display is steady. When consistent readings are achieved, the sensor can be mounted using a universal bracket type SFB-01 or other convenient method.
